Sponsored Swim for León in our 35th Year online!

Dear Swimmers and Supporters of Oxford León Association and Trust

As many of you know, OLAT has been holding a Sponsored Swim for over thirty years, to raise much needed funds for our twin city of León and support our charities Nuevas Esperanzas and Nicaragua Education, Culture and Arts Trust (NECAT).  Nuevas Esperanzas works with families around the Telica volcano near Leon on water and agroecology projects including rainwater harvesting, beekeeping and introducing new crops such as dragon fruit, after their crops were devastated in the hurricanes.  NECAT provides education and support to impoverished families in a suburb of León.
Last year was the first year that we couldn’t hold the Sponsored Swim.  As this year is our 35th Anniversary year we decided that we couldn’t not hold it again this year, so we would try a different way and hold the Sponsored Swim online!  It is a pity that we can’t be together at the Hinksey Pool, but we can be creative and swim anywhere, and anytime during July!  Maybe you have increased your fitness in lockdown, or maybe your swimming has become a bit rusty – just enjoy yourself and pick your surroundings – maybe wild water swimming, or a spa!  Any amount that we raise will help, in this very difficult year.
Please register with JustGiving and link your account to the OLAT Sponsored Swim page, by adding the event to your page:
Sponsored Swim for León in our 35th Year! – JustGiving

Enjoy your swim, anytime, anywhere during July, then please circulate your JustGiving account to your friends to donate!  Nicaragua needs our support and solidarity more than ever!  Keep safe and we hope to see you in person next year!  It would be interesting if people could let me know where they swim and I will let people know how many diverse locations we achieve!
Thank you for your continuing support for Oxford’s furthest away twin!  Especially to those who have already been generous this year in supporting the Quizzes, it is much appreciated.
Best wishes
Jenny Houston Secretary OLAT

Quiz night with musicians coming up Friday 26th

Dear Members and Supporters of the Oxford León Association

The Oxford León Association is holding another Quiz for León on Friday 26 February, it would be great if you could join us!  We are delighted that our musician friends from León, Paco Luis Vega and Franklin Martinez and Bochinche Tropical will be joining us from León and playing their wonderful upbeat Latin American music and also a song from the Misa Campesina!
Our Quiz Maestra will be Jan Marshall, who has kindly written the Quiz and our Quiz Maestro will be the ebullient John Tanner!  There will be five rounds of five questions each, the Quiz will take about an hour and answers given as we go along, the musicians will play at the start, the interval and the end.
To those who have supported our previous Quizzes, we have been amazed by your generosity and our two charities in León – Nuevas Esperanzas and Nicaragua Education, Culture and Arts Trust – have thanked us for this vital support at this very difficult time in Nicaragua.  At the last Quiz on 10 December, we also raised funds for Bishop Harold Dixon’s appeal to help the hurricane stricken Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, where some communities lost everything, the Bishop was extremely grateful.  Thanks to your generosity we were able to send £900 to the Bishop’s appeal, which bought food for the people; £800 to Nuevas Esperanzas to support remote villages who had lost nearly all their crops and where roads and water pipelines were damaged, and £500 to NECAT to support poor children’s education and their community in an impoverished area of León.
We hope you will have a fun time at the Quiz, relax in your Box and bring your own bottle and nibbles, maybe dance to the music and have a go at the questions!

There will be no prizes and no entry fees, only the kudos of winning!   We hope that you will be able to make a donation to OLAT at:

OLAT Quiz in aid of communities affected by Hurricanes Thursday 10 December 7.45 for 8 pm, with Musicians!

Dear Members and Supporters and Twin Towners

Life was already very tough in Nicaragua, but in November two hurricanes hit.
Nuevas Esperanzas reports that in the remote communities on the slopes of Telica, near León, Iota dumped a lot of rain and caused the loss of their corn and bean crops; the strong winds blew down trees damaging the pipeline that carries water to arsenic affected communities, cutting off the water supply to many families.  Last weekend the team worked with members of the community to repair the broken pipes and one of the suspension bridges supplying clean water to El Caracol, Unión España and Nuevo Amanecer.  Roads have also been damaged.  These families need your support more than ever as they have lost their crops and income and the need is great.

OLAT has also been contacted by the Anglican Bishop of Nicaragua Rt Rev Harold Dixon, appealing for aid for the people on the Caribbean coast where homes have been destroyed by the hurricanes and some people have lost everything, the need is also great.  We also still want to help NECAT (Nicaragua Education, Culture and Arts Trust) who are supporting children and their families in León at this very difficult time.
Oxford León Association and Trust is holding another fun fundraiser Quiz on Thursday 10 December, 7.45 for 8 pm and this time we are very excited that the fabulous Musicians that visited Oxford in April 2018, and played at the Misa Campesina – Franklin Martinez and Paco Luis Vega – will be playing their wonderful Latin American music, at the start of the Quiz, in the interval and at the end.  This will be a real treat!

song workshop

The very amazing Ethno England people, together with Oxford’s twin town partnerships, are organising a series of online workshops where we can learn traditional music from our twin towns:

It will be Nicaragua’s term on December 5th, I believe that participants get to learn a song from Nicaragua, whereas the French workshop on the same day will feature a folk tune. To register and get the access info, fill in this form.

Quiz on November 6

As we’re heading into the next lockdown, OLAT is hosting another online quiz night to lift the spirits and raise funds for Leon!

Our charities Nuevas Esperanzas (clean water and agroecology) and Nicaragua Education, Culture and Arts Trust (NECAT), providing educational and social support to impoverished families, have been very grateful for the funds raised at the last Quiz, which has bought essential supplies.  Life was already hard in Nicaragua, but Covid has made things worse and we want to keep supporting them.

Our Quiz Maestro and Host is again the inimitable Mr John Tanner, and Our Quiz Maestra is again the lovely and knowledgeable Jan Marshall, thanks for writing the Quiz Jan!
There will be five rounds of five questions each, the Quiz will take about an hour and answers given as we go along.  At the last Quiz a team from Benson won – can you compete with them?

There will be no prizes and no entry fees, only the kudos of winning!  We hope that you will be able to make a donation to OLAT at:

QUIZ on Friday August 28th

Dear Members and Supporters and Twin Towners
¡Saludos a todos!
We hope everyone is keeping well and finding ways to manage in these continuing extraordinary times.
Huge thanks to all those who joined in the last Quiz on 17 July.  An amazing £606.34 was raised and the proceeds have already been sent to our two charities in León.
The Oxford León Association is holding another fun fundraising Quiz on Zoom at 7.45 for 8 pm on Friday 28 August.  Once again the Quiz Maestra will be our lovely, knowledgeable Jan Marshall, and Mine Host will be the avuncular John Tanner!  Do come and join us!
Our aim is to have an enjoyable evening while raising funds for the two charities that we support in León.  The first two photos attached show tanks to harvest rainwater for the community of Agua Fria on the slopes of the Telica volcano, built by Nuevas Esperanzas, which has been very impactful for the community.  The next three photos are from Nicaragua Education, Culture and Arts Trust, (NECAT) showing food supplies and face masks and hand sanitizer being distributed to the families in Sutiaba, a poor district of León, and a boy reading a letter from the children of Pegasus School, Oxford, which now has a link with NECAT!  It is very interesting to have a look at the wonderful work that these charities do on their websites/Facebook pages.
There will be no prizes and no entry fees, only the Kudos of being the Winner!  Last time the team from Ramallah won, can you challenge them?!  But as this is a Fundraiser, for our charities Nuevas Esperanzas and NECAT, we hope you will be happy to make a donation.
Details about joining the Quiz on Zoom will be sent nearer the time.  You can take part singly or with othersThere will be 5 rounds with 5 questions in each round, on various themes             with an international flavour including one picture round – no questions on Oxford this time to give those from further afield a fair chance!  We estimate that it will take about an hour.            Do get comfortable in your box with your beer/wine/smoothie/tea and nibbles!  The doors will open at 7.45 to have a bit of a chat before getting down to the Quiz!
Do make a note in your diary and join us for the Quiz on Friday 28 August at 7.45 for 8 pm and it would be really great to see friends from Oxford’s other Twin Links!  Do pass on to any          of your friends that enjoy a Quiz!
In the meantime, here is a teaser to get you thinking! The answer will be revealed at the Quiz: There are five countries in the world whose English names, when written as block                        capitals,   contain no “closed” letters. By “closed” letters we mean ones with an area that could be coloured in eg A and O, whereas E, I and U are all “open”.  NICARAGUA would not                  count because A and R contain parts that could be coloured in and so are “closed” letters. See if you can think of these five countries. A clue is they are all in different continents!
Stay safe and well and connected!
Best wishes

QUIZ coming up – Friday July 7

The Oxford León Association is holding a fun fundraising Quiz at 8 pm on Friday 17 July, set by our Quiz Maestra Jan Marshall, please do come and join us!

There will be no prizes and no entry fees, but as this is a Fundraiser, for our charities Nuevas Esperanzas and NECAT, we hope you will be happy to make a donation, please add the word “Quiz”. This can be done via our JustGiving page:

> Those that took part in our last Quiz in October, which was celebrating Oxford’s Eight Twinning Links, will remember the friendly rivalry between the teams! All the links contributed towards the main prize of a food hamper, which was won by the team from the Perm link, and Ramallah won the raffle! It was a good opportunity to socialize with other links and talk about how things work in other groups.
It would be helpful if you could email me that you will be taking part!

John Tanner will be “hosting” the Quiz and details about joining the Quiz on Zoom will be sent nearer the time, at approximately 4 pm on Friday 17 July. You can take part singly or in household teams. This will be a 5 round, 5 question Quiz with a General Knowledge round and some interesting topics. We estimate that it will take about an hour. Do get comfortable with your beer/wine/smoothie/tea and nibbles!

Do make a note in your diary and join us for the Quiz on 17 July at 8 pm and it would be really great to see friends from Oxford’s other Twin Links! Do pass on to any of your friends that enjoy a Quiz!

Best wishes

Misa Campesina postponed

message from our secretary:

Dear Musicians, Singers, Members and Supporters of Oxford Leon Association and Friends of Nicaragua
It is with enormous regret that we have decided to cancel the Misa Campesina on 29 March, because of the national emergency caused by the Corona virus epidemic.
There will be no rehearsals on 21 and 28 March and unfortunately the talk by Leonardo Zapata, director of Nuevas Esperanzas on 28 March is also cancelled.
The government has advised to stop all non-essential contact. This is especially important to ensure the well-being of people who are in the higher-risk categories (the elderly – defined as over 70, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions).
Thank you all for your ongoing support for the Misa, and especially our conductor Duncan Saunderson and lead musician John Garrick. and all the musicians and choir.
Thank you to Blackfriars and to Marcus Robbins and Father Henry Shea for organising the Spanish Order of Mass.
When these difficult times are over, we hope that we can perhaps have a Misa in the Autumn.   In the meantime I hope that you all keep well and I attach a wonderful rendition of the Misa, found on youtube by David Priestman:
Viva La Misa Campesina y Viva Nicaragua!
Please also note that unfortunately the OLAT meeting for tomorrow night 19 March is also cancelled.
Best wishes
Jenny Houston
Secretary OLAT
